About Veil

A suspended sheet of iridescent light hangs in the darkness.

Its surface looks almost weightless, like silk caught between invisible points. Colour shifts across its folds, appearing brighter where the material bends and softer where it stretches.

Fine ripples travel through the surface, changing the way it reflects the surrounding light. Veil is neither entirely fabric nor entirely energy.

It is a luminous membrane, held in space and waiting for the smallest disturbance.

What happens when you stay

Approach the surface and it begins to respond.

Your movements create ripples that travel through the fabric, changing its folds and the colours that appear along them. A larger gesture can stretch the membrane into a new shape; a quieter one produces a smaller disturbance.

With sound enabled, the movement can also take on a resonant quality. After you release it, the veil continues moving for a while before returning towards a softer shape.

The pleasure is in watching a gesture travel beyond the place where it began.

Where it comes from

The movement of fabric is shaped by tension, gravity and the way forces travel through a flexible material.

A disturbance can produce ripples and folds that spread across a surface before gradually losing energy. Veil also takes inspiration from iridescence, the shifting colours visible in materials such as soap films, certain shells and some insect wings.

In many natural examples, these colours arise through optical interference, rather than from pigments alone. The world brings together these ideas of surface tension, cloth motion and changing light.

It treats a thin membrane as something expressive: a material whose appearance changes whenever its shape does.

Things to try

  • Touch one part of the surface gently.
  • Move along the edge and follow the ripple.
  • Stretch the veil and release it.
  • Wait for the smallest remaining movement.
