About Breathe

A luminous form slowly expands and contracts in the dark.

Its edges soften as it grows, then gather towards the centre as it becomes smaller again. The movement is continuous but unhurried, with light changing intensity as the shape passes through each cycle.

Breathe is built around a simple rhythm of expansion and return. There is little to distract from it: just a field of light, a sense of space and a movement that seems to come from within.

What happens when you stay

The light follows its own gentle rhythm, opening and closing even when you do nothing.

Your presence can change the way it moves, allowing you to explore the space between its natural pace and your gestures. Stay with it and the repetition begins to reveal small differences in shape and brightness.

Try moving slowly, then remaining still for a few cycles. There is nothing to synchronise with and no correct pace to follow.

The world continues breathing whether or not you choose to move with it.

Where it comes from

Breathing is one of the body’s most familiar repeating movements, yet it is also part of a wider family of natural rhythms.

Ocean waves, oscillating systems and the expansion and contraction of living structures all describe cycles of movement and return. In physics, oscillation is the repeated variation of a system around an equilibrium, sometimes regular and sometimes more complex.

Breathe draws from this connection between bodily rhythm, periodic motion and light. It also shares an interest with meditative and contemplative art, where repetition changes how a movement is perceived.

It is not a guided breathing exercise, but a space in which rhythm becomes visible.

Things to try

  • Stay still and follow a few cycles.
  • Move gently as the light expands.
  • Wait for the form to gather again.
